  Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are primitive skills?
A. Please click here for answer!

Q: Do I have to have previous wilderness experience?
A: No. The introductory programs are equally suited for both novice and advanced wilderness enthusiasts.

Q: What are the requirements?
A: A good attitude, curiosity, a willingness to learn, some persistence and a desire to work with your hands.

Q: Are there limits on the group size and age?
A: Generally, because of physical limitations and logistics, groups sizes should not exceed 15 – 20 people. On the other hand, I will certainly teach adults on a one to one basis. In addition, children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a parent and children 12 and over are encouraged to apply for group programs.

Q: Do I have to go to the wilderness to learn these skills? If not where can I learn them?
A: No, they can be taught almost anywhere. We certainly can go to the wilderness but many of these skills can be learned right in your back yard and some even in your home. If you are in the Los Angeles area I can arrange to come to your home, school, office, studio or any location you prefer. I run programs in the Santa Monica Mountains, Griffith Park and the Angeles National forest, which is only thirty minutes from the downtown area.

Q: What are the time requirements and options?
A: If you are interested in an introductory program and not designing a full program or experience, I typically will teach a 6-8 hour day in the location of your choice. Some people who are interested in various demonstrations for schools, festivals, parties, media-film and special events often request only a few hours. Customized experiences on your own property or long term training options are not subject to time restrictions and could run for multiple weeks.

Q: What is the cost?
A: Since all programs vary in subject, length and location, please call for a quote. I can alter almost any program to accomondate most budgets.

Q: If I want a full emersion experience in the woods where I'm actually applying the skills for a few days and camping, what should I do?
A: If you have no prior experience and desire an emersion camp out, I recommend that you learn some of the basics in a controlled environment first and see how you like it. When we both have a sense of what you can do, I can design an experience that will push your limits but at the same time keep you safe and in a place where you are not set up for failure. It is unrealistic to just throw someone “cold turkey” into the wilderness with no prior experience. This can be a set up for failure and frustration and usually creates a negative association with the wilderness.

Q: Are there specific native traditions that you follow?
A. No. Although many of the skills contained in these programs are from various Native American tribes, I do not focus on one tradition and there are certainly skills that are included from other tribes around the world.
