----- Meeting Modern Needs With Ancient Skills -----
   Programs :: Plan Your Program

Are you a hiker or outdoor enthusiast that would feel more prepared and confident if you knew how to make a shelter that would keep you alive in an emergency weather condition? Do you not have any outdoor experience but are curious about how natives have lived for thousands of years? Perhaps you’re a seasoned hunter or naturalist looking to expand on your previous knowledge? Or are you a teacher conducting native american studies and would like particular skills demonstrated for your class?

Whether you’re a museum curator or producer looking for advice on incorporating authentic primitive skills into your projects or a family looking for an adventurous weekend, I can provide exciting learning environments that reflect the endless benefits of learning these skills. My lessons and demonstrations are customized to you or your group’s interests and needs. I always adjust my teaching to the group, because everyone learns in their own way and has their own reasons for learning a particular skill.

    "Everyone enjoys different skills. That's why I like teaching in customized learning environments. It's amazing how each experience enriches individuals in different ways."

Together we will shape an experience or adventure for you or your group. What follows are descriptions of the three categories of programs I run. Click on the one that is right for you. To find out more about the topics that can be woven into any of these programs, open the ACTIVITY GUIDE which will help you explore all of the specific skills and activities that are offered.

You may feel overwhelmed by the options and not know where to begin so it is important to remember that you can begin with just about any of the basic skills. Ask "what am I most curious about?" "What skills would I or my group like to walk away with?" If you still can't decide then you may want to join me for a day long INTRO TO THE BASICS, a full day introduction to survival skills.

GROUPS & INDIVIDUALS  ------>
I have taught in various one on one situations for many occasions. One teacher wanted to learn how to make a bow drill fire (fire by friction) because he wanted to demonstrate it to his physics students. My experience with group lessons are comparable. I have visited class rooms to do a full show case of the crafts and skills or sometimes I have just sat down with the students and made string from plants during a crafts class. Participants feel very empowered when they light their first fire with out matches, cook out of a bowl they made from bark or tan a deer hide naturally. Others may gain a new respect for basic luxuries like a house or supper market food.      GO->

LONG-TERM TRAINING  ------>
I have spent weeks with full time students teaching them everything I know about a particular skill because they want to be proficient and able to apply it in a full survival situation. These students are often training to be field instructors for various outdoor leadership positions or they just have very large personal goals and hopes for being able to live off the land. Many participants feel more connected to their surroundings and the old ways of living when they have had a chance to spend extended periods of time collecting plants, rocks, sticks and many other common materials to make functioning tools and works of art like bowls, cooking utensils, clothing, bags, baskets, weapons, drums, flute etc.GO>
EXHIBITS AND INTERACTIVE MEDIA  ------>
I have helped to lead producers from PBS and ABC through survival scenarios for major network shows. I have made digital video demonstration projects of primitive skills and have co-developed customized learning curriculum. I have also worked in museum exhibit and theme fabrication. Survival Skills are multifaceted and can bring new awareness and excitement to many arenas.GO->
