   Programs :: Long-Term Training

Today, the need for outdoor leadership education is constantly increasing, but all too often the programs are lacking because their staff have not had quality mentoring or the opportunity to master essential hands-on skills. My long-term training programs are designed to help instructors, organizations or avid students attain a level of proficiency with both survival skills and curriculum/program design, necessary for comprehensive teaching. By working closely with students for extended periods of time, these programs will cultivate a strong personal connection to wilderness survival, provide new avenues for interacting with groups and students and boost confidence and overall ability.

Educational facilities that are looking to invest in staff training and would like staff to be able to teach wilderness survival/nature skills, can be served by a on location program. Lasting for 1-2 weeks, the basic program can train staff for the environment in which they will be teaching. Longer, customized program options include designing exciting and compelling curriculum, educational infrastructure, manuals and guidebooks, as well as durable crafts and displays. As with all programs, these services can be tailored to your specific needs.

A typical staff training would begin by ensuring a fundamental understanding of basic survival skills, either in the field or classroom. Most days however, would be spent harvesting materials for crafts and tools, teaching more advanced skills and techniques while roaming the property that will eventually become the site for your programs. The connections made to the land during these periods of time will become invaluable, as staff continue to explore areas with participants and develop their own natural connection. One or two week programs may include the establishment of a primitive campsite, which can serve as a teaching site for staff. As members of the staff advance in their skill comprehension, lectures and activities concerning personal and group dynamics will also be covered, which emphasize how to read and profile groups and individuals in order to ensure a successful and safe learning environment.

For organizations or individuals that are interested in pursuing a long term training program, I can offer comprehensive support through correspondence in addition to occasional visits to your home or organization. Outlines, activities, lesson plans, videos and recommended reading can all be part of a long term package to augment existing experiences. For instance, if you or your staff are having trouble teaching or incorporating a particular skill, I can help develop a video or picture layout aid specifically addressing that skill. Troubleshooting on the phone and consulting services can also be part of a package. Based on your goals and budget, long term arrangements can also be made, like visiting multiple times during a year (based on our respective schedules). I always strive to find a solution that will work for you. Based on the extensive nature of these programs, and the plethora of options, please feel free to contact me with any interests, concerns or questions you might have. I’d be happy to speak with you at length concerning your specific needs. CONTACT ->
