Movement & The Senses
These
days most people don't need to have
heightened senses in order to warn them of attacking
grizzly bears or hungry mountain lions. We don't
need to be vigilant to find rare medicinal plants
or the track of a deer that evades our hunting
eye. When a tree falls on a side walk, landscape
crews from the town will remove it. If a mountain
interferes with a road way we can blast a canyon
through it. In short, we no longer adapt ourselves
to our surroundings. We adapt our surroundings
to the inflated needs of this modern age.
Because of this, we no longer have a reason to
strengthen our senses and to become physically
agile in order to survive. We have become lax on
a sensory and physical level because our lives
no longer depend on our keen senses and physical
agility. The result is a disconnection. People often say "I never see animals in that park " or "why
are deer always running" . It's almost as if nature
will not allow us to see aspects of it until we learn
how to readapt ourselves.
Activity: This is a great program for kids.
Learning how to slow down to nature’s pace is fun
relaxing, and a great first step into a world which
often requires one to be more aware in order to avoid
danger. We will go over techniques and exercises to expand our sensory perception
and attune ourselves to the signals and signs of the natural world. During this time we will also be learning how to walk and blend with nature in a way that allows us to participate with wildlife instead of scaring it off. We will cover: - Balance and sensory exercises - techniques for movement and camoflage in the wild.
